3 Big Reasons It Might Be Time for Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the final molars that typically emerge in your late teens or early twenties. While not everyone needs them removed, these teeth can be unpredictable, often causing problems for your oral health. But why do they cause so many issues to the point where you might need wisdom tooth extractions? Continue reading to see the three major reasons why your dentist might recommend saying goodbye to your late-blooming molars.

1. They Can Cause Overcrowding

When wisdom teeth erupt, they often don’t have enough room to fit which can push other teeth out of alignment. The after effect is crowding, which causes your teeth to shift and twist to make room for each other. This can be especially frustrating if you’ve undergone orthodontic work in the past, undoing your treatment.

If you notice your teeth shifting, a crowded feeling in your jaw, or pain when your wisdom teeth are growing in, it may be time for a removal consultation.

2. They’re Often Impacted

If your wisdom teeth don’t fully erupt because they’re blocked by other teeth or bone, they become “impacted.” This can cause cysts, damage to nearby teeth, and even long-term complications if left untreated.

The best defense against impaction is seeing your dentist regularly, about once every six months. This will allow them to use X-rays to monitor otherwise hidden changes in your tooth structure and take steps to prevent it from worsening.

3. They’re Prone to Decay and Gum Disease

Wisdom teeth are hard to clean because they’re so far back in your mouth. This makes them a prime target for plaque and bacteria buildup, leading to cavities, gum disease, and infections.

So, even if your wisdom teeth come in straight, their location can put your oral health at risk! If you’re experiencing any redness, bleeding, or swelling in your gums, especially around your wisdom teeth, removing them might be best.

Does Everyone Need Wisdom Tooth Extractions?

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed, but dentists often recommend extraction in the name of prevention. If your wisdom teeth are causing discomfort or showing signs of potential problems, it’s better to act early before your oral health is compromised.

If you’re still unsure about your wisdom teeth, it’s time to schedule a consultation with your dentist. They’ll evaluate your teeth, take X-rays, and recommend the best way forward for your smile!
